Mirrormask

Let me start off this review by saying Steven and I have been waiting about a year to see this movie. It was produced by The Jim Henson Company and has an awesome trailer (go to www.mirrormask.com to see it). However we had no idea when it came out and we checked back to the site ever month or so to see when it came to theaters. We discovered it came out September 30th and we had it written on the calender because it looked so good.

September 30th came and we looked on Fandango (if you don't use it, you should start, it's a great site as well as funny commercials). We did not see one listing for Mirrormask, hmm, we looked at the Official Site and apparently it was selected release (don't you hate that) and the nearest theater that played it was in Atlanta. Please remember I was 7 months pregnant and feeling like crap at this point. There was no way I was driving to Atlanta unless I really needed to, like to get bread from Great Harvest Bread Co (Note there are 2 of those on our island, YES!).

So we decided to wait until it came to DVD, it did and we just saw it. WOW...We wish we would have seen it in Atlanta on the big screen. It is visually just plain fun to watch, a visual feast, eye candy. Beautiful to say the least.

The story is of a family, and specifically a girl named Helena who grows up on the circus. Her dream is to "runaway to real life" as she dislikes the constant perform/move/perform life of the circus. Stephanie Leonidas plays Helena, our heroine.

Much like Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth (who cursed her baby brother to be taken by goblins and then had to rescue him), Helena must save her mother after cursing her to the cusp of death (as most teenagers wish they had the power to do).

She finds herself in a dreamworld of her own making filled with flying fish, angry books, and myriad masks. In order to save this world's White Queen (her mother) she must find the talisman of good that was stolen by anti-Helena, her twin in this world.

This is a story in the shoes of Alice in Wonderland but adds much. Please go down to your local WalMart. You will pay $19.99 for this movie. You won't find it for less. Anywhere. OK, maybe for $19.95 at Target. But seriously, it is worth it.
