Serenity and Firefly

Serenity is out of most first run theatres now and moving into second runs, and I wanted to tell you what I thought about it before it was gone and you lost your chance to see it.

Serenity is a movie based on the television series Firefly from 3 years ago. It was prematurely cancelled even though it had decent ratings, primarily because of its high production cost and because the executives didn't have faith that it would be profitable.

Firefly is in an interesting genre by itself. It is a western/SciFi hybrid. You can go from an old western gunslinging getaway into a Firefly-class freighter (space going ship) and into a western style saloon in space quickly. I know, it sounds like a bad mix, but Firefly pulls it off wonderfully. Unfortunately, this mix might have been its undoing simply because it DOES sound a little hokey.

The dialog is sharp and witty, serious and engrossing, all at the right moments. The story is of a man who fought on the losing side of a civil war, and his life as a mostly honorable trader/pirate/freighter/outlaw after the war. His crew is his family and what a family they are. I highly suggest you purchase the season dvds SOON. You wil not be disappointed. =)

All of the original cast members from Firefly return for the movie. It picks up about 6 months after the original series and the action takes off quickly. The first 10 minutes of this film stunned me, and the 10 minutes after that were even better. You can even watch the first 9 minutes of this movie by clicking here. Watch the first 9 minutes here, and then go watch the movie. PLEASE
